The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has appointed Ian Overton as Country Manager for Sri Lanka. In this role, Overton will manage research staff at IWMI’s headquarters and lead engagement with IWMI’s stakeholders in the country.

Overton’s previous experience includes Chief Executive of the South Australian State Government Agency, Green Industries SA, Chief Research Services Officer for Water Research Australia, Stream Leader for Environmental Flows and Water Values and Benefits at CSIRO in Australia and Managing Director for Mapping and Beyond Pty Ltd.

Overton has worked in academia, private industry and State and Federal Governments. His experience includes environmental flows, transboundary water allocation, water utility management, floods, droughts, natural capital, circular economy, spatial information systems and modelling.

He has a Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Business Administration, Graduate Certificate in Management, Bachelor of Arts Honours and a Bachelor of Science. Overton is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and an affiliate professor with the University of Adelaide Business School.

“Sri Lanka has many water resource challenges, including floods and droughts and building improved water management infrastructure. Working together with all stakeholders is essential to build resilience in Sri Lanka and move towards a water secure future,” Overton said.

Overton’s appointment reinforces IWMI’s commitment to delivering research-for-development solutions that respond to the region’s pressing water and climate challenges, while deepening partnerships with governments, academic institutions, civil society and development agencies.
