Mali
Mali is a landlocked country, characterized by a predominantly arid climate and reliance on the Niger River for agriculture and water resources. The Niger River is crucial for irrigation, providing water for both subsistence and commercial farming in the country’s fertile inland delta. However, the country faces challenges related to water scarcity, fluctuating river levels, and desertification, which are exacerbated by climate change, posing threats to agricultural productivity and water security.
IWMI in Mali
IWMI’s work in Mali focuses on improving water productivity and enhancing agricultural resilience in the Sahelian region. Through targeted interventions, IWMI aims to increase water use efficiency and restore vital wetland ecosystems, benefiting local communities and promoting food security. By integrating small-scale irrigation solutions, IWMI works to enhance agricultural livelihoods and build social and ecological resilience, fostering sustainable farming practices in the face of climate challenges.
Additionally, IWMI’s initiatives in Mali aim to scale irrigation solutions and improve water management across the region. Through the development of online tools and geospatial analysis, IWMI supports humanitarian agencies in targeting efficient irrigation investments, particularly in times of crisis. This collaborative effort aims to ensure the sustainable use of water resources, boost agricultural productivity, and support the resilience of smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth, in Mali’s vulnerable agricultural landscapes.
