DIWASA: Digital Innovations for Water Secure Africa
Africa faces mounting pressure on its water resources driven by rising demand, increasing climate variability and declining water quality. Yet limited data on water availability and scarcity continues to constrain effective planning and evidence-based decision-making needed to address these challenges
DIWASA aims to advance water security across Africa by improving the availability and accessibility of reliable water data, strengthening institutional capacities and deploying cutting-edge digital innovations. It is reshaping how data, technology and partnerships intersect to enhance water management across the continent.
Through decision-support tools, remote sensing data, tailored capacity development and inclusive stakeholder engagement, DIWASA enables institutions to plan, monitor and manage water resources more effectively and sustainably. At its core, DIWASA promotes a data-driven approach that builds the capacity of African organizations to collect, analyze and apply information — supporting a shift from reactive responses to proactive planning.
The project scope is structured into the four pillars:
- Pillar I: Development and rolling out of products and use cases.
- Pillar II: User engagement and capacity development
- Pillar III: Strengthen the integration of water products in the DEA platform to support increased use and engagement.
- Pillar IV: Improved water management decisions in Limpopo River Basin through Digital Twin implementation
