Stakeholders including Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), International Water Management Institute (IWMI), and other relevant organizations have agreed to enhance collaboration to address potential issues during the 2023 rainy season in Nigeria. At a workshop in Abuja, the Directors-General of these agencies acknowledged the economic damages and loss of lives caused by flooding in the past despite prior warnings, emphasizing the need for increased public awareness and flood risk reduction measures. IWMI, hosting the workshop, highlighted the importance of flood forecasting and early warning systems in mitigating flood impacts, considering the growing global trend of intensified heavy rainfall events due to climate change. The stakeholders emphasized collective responsibility and interagency collaboration for effective flood mitigation.
