Jordan

Jordan, one of the driest countries in the world, faces significant water scarcity challenges, with its primary water sources — the Jordan River and the Disi aquifer — under immense pressure. The country’s arid landscape is compounded by climate change, making water management and conservation critical for both agriculture and human livelihoods. Efforts to improve water efficiency, such as innovative irrigation techniques and water reuse, are essential to ensuring the country’s environmental and economic sustainability.

IWMI in Jordan

IWMI’s work in Jordan focuses on enhancing water security and climate resilience in one of the most water-scarce regions in the world. By integrating nature-based solutions for water management, the organization supports local communities in building climate resilience through sustainable practices in agriculture, livestock, and fisheries. These efforts are complemented by capacity-building initiatives to strengthen governance and empower local stakeholders, ensuring long-term sustainability and the adoption of efficient water use practices.

IWMI plays a key role in optimizing water use across sectors, from agriculture to municipal services, addressing both the impacts of climate change and increasing demand. Through innovative solutions such as remote sensing for water productivity and pilot projects in refugee-hosting communities, IWMI helps Jordan improve its water governance systems and enhance resilience to droughts and climate extremes. These projects also foster private sector engagement and support Jordan’s broader development goals, contributing to water security and economic growth.
