Women
Women play a critical role in collecting, managing and safeguarding water at home and within their communities. They also make indispensable contributions to ensuring water is used efficiently and responsibly in agriculture. Yet they remain excluded from technical roles and decision-making in water governance. Women are also among the most disproportionately impacted by water insecurity. Unequal access continues to affect their health, safety, livelihoods and economic participation, reinforcing cycles of poverty and vulnerability.
At IWMI, we work with a range of partners to promote policies that strengthen women’s leadership in water management. We use research to closely examine the specific needs and challenges faced by women in agriculture. By identifying these barriers, we design and implement programs that support women’s access to resources, knowledge and finance, enabling them to make meaningful contributions within the water sector.
