Tousif worked at the Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Engineering (CEWRE). He served as Assistant Professor at CEWRE, where he filled many roles, e.g., trainer/educator, researcher, supervisor, project manager, and coordinator. Tousif secured and managed research grants from international donors, and supervised a large number of postgraduate students. Tousif authored or co-authored several articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has worked extensively in river basins of South Asia, particularly the Indus River System. He also worked as a development consultant early in his career.
