Saber A. El-Shafai is currently involved in Rewater+, a project focused on wastewater reuse in the Middle East and North Africa region. He works on addressing severe water scarcity and declining water quality in countries including Egypt, Jordan and Morocco, with a focus on capacity building through face-to-face and online training programs.
El-Shafai contributes to advancing freshwater and wastewater swaps between sectors, a promising solution for regions facing permanent or temporary water scarcity. He is involved in efforts to develop a systematic mapping of these swaps to better understand their geographic application. In parallel, El-Shafai participates in a systematic literature review on the microbial quality of irrigation water in Arab countries, aiming to assess the human health risks associated with the use of low-quality water.
He also supports the development of research proposals and business development initiatives focused on the use of nature-based technologies for wastewater treatment, nutrient recovery and sustainable feed and food production.
