Oorna Raut

Research Officer - Rural Livelihoods


Oorna Raut is a researcher and communications professional with an interest in rural livelihoods, climate change and labor migration. Her research and editorial work has covered a range of livelihoods and social security-related themes. Before joining as staff, Raut was an IWMI-Tata Pre-Doctoral Fellow where she explored transboundary water issues in the Brahmaputra basin. As an editor at the digital media platform, People’s Archive of Rural India, she was part of an award-winning editorial team that closely documented the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on the lives of migrants and vulnerable populations in India. Raut holds a Masters degree in Governance, development and public policy from the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, and a Bachelors degree in Sociology from Lady Shri Ram College for Women, University of Delhi.
