Geethya Fernando
Assistant Research Officer
Geethya Fernando is a water resources and geospatial analyst with hands-on expertise in water balance assessment across multiple spatial and temporal scales. Her core skills include applying remote sensing, GIS and programming for water system analysis and decision support. Fernando has strong coding experience in Python and R, particularly in processing, calibrating and validating large climate and hydrological datasets. She is also proficient in developing customized scripts, visualizations and decision-support tools for sustainable water management. Her background covers GIS/RS-based hydrological modeling and large-scale data handling on cloud platforms. Fernando has demonstrated the ability to work with multidisciplinary teams, support field data collection and collaborate with research partners.
At IWMI, she has contributed to global initiatives such as the Scale Invariant Water Accounting Plus (WA+) in Uganda, Jordan, Nepal and West Africa, the SEWAGE-TRACK framework for wastewater reuse potential across MENA and Latin America and the application of future climate models under different SSP scenarios to project evapotranspiration (AET).
