Rwanda
Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is characterized by its lush landscapes, numerous lakes, and rivers, with the Nile and Congo river basins playing a significant role in its water resources. The country faces challenges related to water availability, especially during dry spells, which impact agriculture and livelihoods, but it also focuses on improving water management for both rural and urban communities. Efforts to restore ecosystems, protect watersheds, and enhance water storage are crucial to addressing the impacts of climate change and ensuring long-term environmental sustainability.
IWMI in Rwanda
IWMI’s work in Rwanda focuses on integrating digital technologies to improve decision-making processes across food, land, and water systems, particularly addressing the gender and urban-rural digital divide. Through these initiatives, IWMI works to ensure equitable access to water and agricultural information, empowering local communities and decision-makers to make informed choices that promote sustainable water management and climate resilience. The organization also supports the development of integrated water resource management strategies that align with both local needs and broader environmental goals.
In addition to digital innovation, IWMI collaborates with local stakeholders to enhance the sustainability of Rwanda’s agrifood systems, emphasizing climate-smart agriculture and improved water management practices. By promoting the use of data-driven tools and participatory approaches, IWMI is helping communities adapt to climate change while enhancing food security and fostering inclusive economic growth. This work not only supports rural livelihoods but also contributes to achieving long-term environmental sustainability in the region.
