Fish for livelihoods (SAIL)
Under Component 1 of SAIL, IWMI will investigate the constraints, risks and opportunities both to, and from, aquaculture with regards to water resources – quantity and quality – for the expansion of small scale aquaculture. Under the inception phase, IWMI will undertake a water resources assessment of both surface and groundwater for Mandalay, Magway, Sagaing, Kachin and Northern Shan in Myanmar. This will gain understanding of key water resource issues, drivers, risks and vulnerabilities in each of these five states that may have implications for aquaculture. Under the implementation phase we will work both at the community and basin levels. At the basin level, IWMI will utilize water resources models to investigate scenarios of land-use and climate change and the potential impacts on water availability for aquaculture.
